EMEC Testing Leads to MeyGen Order

The company behind MeyGen, a major marine energy project planned for the Pentland Firth, has signed agreements for the supply of four 1.5 megawatt (MW) tidal turbines.

Atlantis Resources Limited intends to use three turbines developed by Andritz Hydro Hammerfest for the first phase of the MeyGen project. The fourth machine will be one of Atlantis’ own tidal turbines.

Tim Cornelius, Atlantis Resources’ chief executive officer , said: “The use of an Andritz tidal power turbine system for Phase 1 of the MeyGen project follows several years of successful testing at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), the world’s leading marine power device test facility.

“EMEC provided the industry with the opportunity to test full-scale, grid-connected prototype devices in unrivalled wave and tidal conditions. As a result, we are now in a position to order systems ready for full commercial deployment.”

The MeyGen project will be developed in the Inner Sound, the channel between the island of Stroma and the north easterly tip of the Scottish mainland.

Atlantis describes MeyGen as the largest consented tidal stream power project in Europe and aims to commence power production in 2016.
