An Indian state-owned electric utilities company, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), announced plans to install a system which would connect offshore wind turbines to the grid, according to DNA India news site.

“Integration of electricity generated from renewable energy resources with the grid is our focus area. As part of this initiative, we are working on a mechanism to set up a system to feed electricity generated from offshore wind energy projects to the national grid,” said Chairman and Managing Director RN Nayak.

The pilot system will be developed in one of the three following locations Tamil Nadu, Gujarat or Kanyakumari.

India is the second biggest wind market in Asia after China with around 20GW of installed onshore capacity.

Earlier this year, India asked for help from the European Union in preparing an offshore wind plan which will focus on the states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

Due to unavailability of good sites onshore and poor roads the country is looking to develop offshore wind capacity.
