The Lizard could see 40 new jobs opened due to renewable energy development in Swansea Bay.

Shire Oak Energy Limited plans to reopen Dean Quarry near St Keverne where it said it would extract at least 1.5 million tons of material in the first year, according to West Briton news site.

The rock will be used to build a 9.5 kilometre breakwater to create a lagoon of around 11.5 square kilometres.

With total capacity of 320MW, the tidal lagoon will be able to produce electricity for around 155,000 homes.

If the quarry receives planning approval, it could be opened by the next summer, said Liz Marsden from Shire Oak Energy Limited.

Besides this, the closest quarries with the right kind of rock are in the Netherlands or Norway.

The local community backed this initiative. One of the residents said: “If they employ local people, it’s got to be good for the community.”
