Dong Energy today welcomed the decision of the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change to grant development consent for the Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm development in Liverpool Bay.

The Development Consent Order (DCO) was approved by the Rt.Hon. Edward Davey MP at the recommendation of the Planning Inspectorate and covers all offshore work including the turbines, offshore substation, array cables and part of the of export cable.

Brent Cheshire, Dong Energy’s UK Country Chairman , said: “Today’s announcement is an important step in clearing the way for the company to make a final investment decision on Burbo Bank Extension which, with a generating capacity of up to 250 megawatts, has the potential to power more than 170,000 homes.”

Programme Director Klaus Skoust Møller said: “This news is a great result at a key point of a project which has been a well-planned and transparent from the beginning.”

In August this year, Dong Energy announced a conditional agreement for the purchase of 32 units of MHI Vestas Offshore Wind’s V164-8.0MW offshore wind turbine for the installation at the Burbo Bank Extension Project. Subject to a final investment decision being taken, the agreement will pave the way for the first commercial order of one of the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbines.

Burbo Bank Extension was one of three Dong Energy’s projects awarded a FID-enabling Contract for Difference in April 2014.
