At the beginning of October, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind’s new wind turbine, installed at the test center Østerild, produced enough electricity to power 13,500 Danish households in just 24 hours, thus breaking the world record.

A goal that is high on the offshore wind industry list is to reduce the cost per kWh. A cornerstone of achieving this is to build larger and more efficient wind turbines.

V164-8.0 MW is a central piece of this game, since the prototype generated 192,000 kWh in 24 hours and thus showed that it is highly possible to increase the efficiency of offshore wind turbines.

“The turbine was installed and put into operation in January 2014 and operated with over 90 per cent. availability. Our main focus now is to continue to document the turbine efficiency to measure its energy curve and energy quality to achieve type certification,” said Jens Tommerup, CEO of MHI Vestas Offshore Wind .

Denmark’s weather conditions create a good place for testing of future large wind turbines. At the Østerild Test Center, wind turbines with a maximum height of 250 meters can be tested.
