With steady growth of the offshore wind industry in the near and further future, offshore wind turbines reach their age limit or maximum operating duration. The need for repowering of wind turbines is foreseeable and provides the players of the offshore wind industry, politics and business with new challenges.

The onshore wind energy shows that this step – for economic reasons – is realized much earlier than expected and partly far before reaching the end of technical or economic service life.

The Maritime Center of Excellence in Leer, Germany, yesterday hosted a conference titled “Repowering / Dismantling Offshore Wind”. During the conference, renowned experts in the offshore wind industry gave a comprehensive overview of the repowering process and groundbreaking opinions for future decisions.

The one-day event is part of the project “Offshore Hub Ems-Achse”, which started in January 2014 and has a duration of 15 months. The project is coordinated by the MARIKO GmbH in Leer.

The aim of the project is to strengthen the Ems-Achse region for the offshore wind energy as well as an optimized positioning and networking of the region as a location for offshore wind energy in Germany and Europe. Building strategic alliances at national and European level should build a bridge to other technologically advanced offshore regions.
