Norstec Academy student Olga Rocío Herrera has written the following article about her experience of a large European wind energy fair.
Thousands of people were moved by the wind in the last week of September. From different continents, after crossing seas and frontiers they gathered in Germany for WindEnergy Hamburg 2014. Engineers, scientists, students, companies and organizations from all over the world took part in the conference and exhibition. In the halls, the latest available technologies related to wind power generation were shown.
From A to Z everything was present, including big manufacturers of wind turbines, components, and accessories. Specialists in wind assessment, wind field, and terrain modelling. Cutting edge technologies for controlling, measurements and developing of wind energy systems. The fair was a complete delight for experts, beginners and wind power enthusiasts.
I was interested to hear from the conferences how European experience and knowledge is shared with emerging wind sectors in places like Asia. Leading companies in the wind market were also invited to present their point of view about wind power generation and management. Topics included preferred technology in wind energy converters based on economic, engineering and market demand aspects.
During the fair days, I had the special opportunity to meet and share part of my time with RenewableUK and UK Trade and Investment; two British bodies committed to the growth and implementation of renewable energy technology in the UK. They showed excellent opportunities for companies to do business in the UK; one of the leading countries in the offshore wind energy market.
One great UK success story we learnt about was Siemens. By 2016 it is expected Siemens’ new manufacturing plant in Yorkshire will be producing rotor blades with its newest technology. Other international companies such as DONG Energy also are developing offshore wind farms in British waters.
I did not only get to know about the great project and plans Europe is developing, but also got to know very animated people doing their best job, pushing forward and spreading the voice of renewables. I also want to mention my fellow Norstec Academy students Beckie Cargill from England, and Paul Lawson based in Germany; together we had a great time being a part of the event.
The WindEnergy fair was a rewarding experience for young professionals, as I am, in the exciting field of wind energy. Thanks Norstec Academy for the opportunity to share a common passion: Wind energy!
