French engineering firm in the field of marine energies, Sabella, is currently testing its tidal energy generator at INSEAN research institute in Italy.

With blades diameter of 15 meters, Sabella D15 has a capacity of 2.5MW in water speeds of 4m/s.

This is company’s largest bi-directional turbine that can be installed in marine or estuarine sites.

Rome-based INSEAN is a part of MaRINET network which aims to accelerate the development of marine renewable energy (wave, tidal & offshore-wind) by bringing together world-class testing facilities at all scales to offer EU-funded testing and to coordinate focussed R&D.

Sabella recently announced it will advance with the deployment of tidal energy turbine in April 2015 despite failing to win government funding.
