Japan’s offshore wind sector seems to have surged lately, as news about planned offshore wind farms off the country’s coast keep coming to news desks.

According to Nikkei Asian Review, Japanese engineering company Hitachi Zosen has teamed up with Mitsubishi and Sumitomo Electric Industries to build an offshore wind farm off the coast of Murakami, Niigata Prefecture.

The proposed offshore wind project, worth around JPY 100 billion (approx. EUR 744 million), will comprise 40 to 50 turbines covering a 2,700-hectare area. This is estimated to be enough to power 170,000 households with clean power.

Feasibility studies are scheduled to start this year. Construction will kick off in 2020 and the wind farm is expected to be completed in four years.
