During his visit to Swansea yesterday, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said that the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon project has a “real transformational potential” for Swansea, the Evening Post writes.
Along with the clean, green energy, the project could be a major economic boost for the region, Cameron explained.
Tidal Lagoon Power Ltd, the company behind the proposed project, is scheduled to hear the final decision by the newly elected Energy Secretary Amber Rudd on June 10.
“The Minister has to make the decision in the proper way but we feel we have done as much as we can to help put it on the map,” David Cameron told the Evening Post. “We have very careful processes in the UK, environmental safeguards, planning inquiries. I have to declare an interest, I have a company in my constituency that has been involved in the design process, that is how I first heard about it.”
Following the recent election outcome, concerns were raised over Cameron’s party not pushing for renewables enough. Even though they want to stop new public subsidy for onshore wind farms, according to their 2015 Manifesto, Conservatives have committed to support tidal energy and offshore wind, along with nuclear, oil and gas resources.
