Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V and VolkerWessels (Volker Stevin International) have been awarded a contract by Veja Mate Offshore Project GmbH for the Veja Mate offshore wind farm in the German section of the North Sea.

Both companies have a 50% share in the contract worth approximately EUR 500 million, which covers the design, procurement, fabrication, supply, transportation, installation and testing of sixty seven foundations for the offshore wind project.

Each of the wind turbine foundations consists of an XXL monopile fabricated in Rostock (Germany) and a transition piece fabricated in Aalborg (Denmark). Following the transport from the fabrication sites to the wind farm, the monopiles will be installed with a purpose-built jack-up installation vessel supplemented by VolkerWessels and Boskalis shared equipment after which the transition pieces will be installed and flange-bolted to the monopiles.

The monopiles for the Veja Mate offshore wind farm weigh approximately 1300 tonnes and have a diameter of 7.8 meters. Volker Stevin International is responsible for the design and engineering of the permanent works and the handling tools during transport and installation of the foundations.

The fabrication works will commence in the third quarter of 2015 and offshore installation works will commence in the first quarter of 2016 with completion expected at the end of 2016.
