EU countries have agreed to invest a total of €150 million for 20 cross-European energy infrastructure projects.
The projects will increase energy security by contributing to the completion of an EU energy market and increasing the integration of renewable energy on the electricity grid, European Commission said. They will also help end the energy isolation of some EU countries from Europe-wide energy networks.
In the electricity sector, the agreed list includes feasibility study for the Celtic interconnector (EUR 3,860,332), which will link France and Ireland through a long-distance subsea cable. EU will also fund studies for ElecLink, a France-UK interconnector (EUR 492,669), and Greenwire Interconnector that proposes to interconnect Ireland and UK (EUR 809,545).
In addition, PCI compressed air energy storage project in United Kingdom, developed by Gaelectric Energy Storage Ltd, has been granted EUR 6,465,000 for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) studies.
