This September, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) will organize Metocean awareness courses in London.

The courses, aimed at all workers in the offshore sector, continue in Kuala Lumpur and Houston.

In recognition of the courses’ popularity, the IMarEST is offering a year’s complimentary membership for all attendees.

Recent extreme weather patterns in the UK and around the world have demonstrated the importance of Metocean awareness, which combines meteorological and oceanographic data.

IMarEST’s Technical Director, Dr Bev Mackenzie , said: “This is always a popular course and one where attendees will gain a vital understanding of Metocean and how greater knowledge can improve safety, improve decision-making and planning, and reduce costs for the offshore industries.”

Metocean quantifies the impact and effect of weather and sea conditions (including winds, waves, currents and water levels) on a wide range of activities in the offshore oil and gas and marine renewables industries.

This includes seismic and geotechnical surveys, drilling campaigns, new project developments, tow-out and installation of structures, operations and maintenance, and field abandonment.

Dr Bev Mackenzie continued: “Accurate guidance is critical for safe and efficient operations across the oil and gas industry but also to the wider offshore renewables industry and supporting services such as shipping and helicopter operations.”

Speakers on the September course, which runs from September 22 to 24, include Dr Colin Grant the current chair of the Metocean Committee of the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) and Dr Gus Jeans whose career as a professional oceanographer spans 20 years.

Ian Leggett, who recently retired from Shell after 30 years with the company managing data collection programmes, weather forecast services and the development of operational statistics and design criteria, is acting as IMarEST’s Metocean Global Lead and will also speak in London.

The next course in the global series takes place from October 27 to 29 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in Houston, USA from November 18 to 19.

The residential courses combine presentations with interactive workshops, including a group case study exercise. Delegates will also receive a comprehensive course manual on attendance.
