Marine Power Systems, a Swansea-based wave energy technology company, has expanded its team by hiring a top student from the mechanical engineering discipline. Daniel Pérez Torres, who has a background in marine renewable energy, recently started work at the company as a full time design engineer.
Torres has completed a mechanical engineering degree at Queen Mary University, London and specialised in computational methods. Subsequently he completed a Master of Science degree in marine renewable energy at Plymouth University. During his master’s degree, Torres approached Marine Power Systems to work with the company to pursue his thesis in computational modelling and physical tank testing at the Plymouth University’s Coastal, Ocean and Sediment Transport (COAST) Laboratory.
Plymouth COAST laboratory is a unique facility, providing physical model testing, array testing, environmental modelling and coastal engineering. After being awarded the highest classification for his master’s degree and his thesis being awarded the highest mark in his cohort, Torres completed an internship with Marine Power Systems. His internship saw him involved in further development of Marine Power System’s WaveSub device, a second generation wave energy converter, which addresses the challenges to extracting wave energy.
Torres has relocated to Swansea to continue his work with Marine Power Systems. He will be focusing on the continued development of the quarter scale prototype of the WaveSub and subsequently, will gain further invaluable industry experience to add to his impressive achievements.

From pursuing an internship with us, he proved himself to be a bright individual, who was already very familiar with modelling and prototype testing of the unique WaveSub device.
