Deepwater Wind, the developer of the first US offshore wind farm is proposing a new offshore wind project with two new battery energy storage systems for Long Island’s South Fork.
Deepwater ONE – South Fork project includes a 90MW offshore wind farm comprising 15 turbines, and represents the first phase of a regional offshore wind farm the company is developing some 30 miles (approx. 48km) southeast of Montauk, New York. Deepwater Wind said the proposal has been made in response to PSEG-Long Island’s request for new local energy resources serving the South Fork.
To complement the wind farm, the company is also proposing to build two new battery energy storage facilities, which will consist of lithium-ion battery technology designed and installed by General Electric. The energy storage facilities will be located on industrially zoned sites on Industrial Road in Montauk and at the Wainscott Commercial Center and will be operational by 2018. Together, the sites could store 15MW of energy.
Construction on Deepwater ONE – South Fork could begin as early as 2019, with commercial operations by 2022.
Deepwater Wind said it designed the Deepwater ONE project using the same technology as the Block Island Wind Farm, America’s first offshore wind farm, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2016.
