Hull-based company Composite Panel Services has won a contract worth more than £500,000 to work on Siemens’ new offshore wind turbine blade factory in Alexandra Dock.

The east Hull plant, part of a site that will eventually employ more than 1,000 people, is being built by national company VolkerFitzpatrick. It has asked Composite Panel Services to install about 86,100sq ft of wall and ceiling panels in the facility.

Managing director Andy Miller said: “We are delighted to have secured this contract in what is always a very competitive market. Alongside the work we are already scheduled to undertake, 2016 promises to be an extremely busy and exciting time for our business and will undoubtedly lead to a growth in our workforce both onsite and within our administrative departments.

“This is great news for the local economy as well as our own employees.”

The project will see up to 20 staff members working at the site.

Ian Simmons , senior project manager at VolkerFitzpatrick, said: “Alongside the work we have placed with other local firms, we feel we are demonstrating our commitment to the people and city of Hull.”

About 200 construction jobs are being created as the 431,000sq ft blade factory goes up. VolkerFitzpatrick, which is headquartered in Hertfordshire, has committed to providing a quarter of on-site labour from within a 25-mile radius of the project. It has already awarded a £12m subcontract to Hull company Neville Tucker Heating, which will carry out electrical and mechanical building services at the site.

Humber firm Clugston Construction has also won a separate contract with Siemens, to construct a 132,000sq ft service and logistics centre in Alexandra Dock. It is said to be worth about £11m.
