Hamburg-based Nordsee One GmbH has chosen compatriot EMS Maritime Offshore GmbH (EMO) to provide one crew transfer vessel for the Nordsee 1 offshore wind farm.

The vessel will be used for daily transfers of staff and equipment from Norddeich or alternative harbours to the Nordsee 1 site and in between individual locations.

The value and duration of the contract were not disclosed. EMO has already been chosen to provide a marine coordination team to Nordsee 1 project, and to monitor and safeguard the wind farm construction area.

Nordsee One GmbH is the company set up by the owners of the project, Northland Power Inc. and RWE Innogy GmbH, to develop the 322 MW Nordsee 1.

The wind farm covers a total area of 41.3 km² and is situated approximately 40km north of the island of Juist, between the traffic separation area Terschelling-German Bight and German Bight Western Approach.

The Nordsee 1 will consist of 54 Senvion turbines and is expected to be operational in 2017, and to generate over 1,300 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, enough to meet the needs of 400,000 German households. The first steel foundation, or monopile, for the Nordsee 1 was installed ahead of schedule on 15 December 2015.

The Nordsee 1 is part of a bigger project which proposes for the construction of two more wind farms, Nordsee 2 & 3. The project envisages some 162 turbines to be erected in an area of around 100 km², with a total capacity of around 1,000 megawatts.

The total investment for all stages is estimated at some EUR 3 billion.
