Taipower Aims for 1800MW of Installed Offshore Wind Power Capacity by 2030

Taiwanese state-owned utility Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) plans to install 1,800 megawatts of offshore wind power capacity in the next 15 years, according to local media.

Taipower has identified Fangyuan, Changhua County, as the hub where works on the first offshore wind farm are planned to start in 2018. The wind farm is planned to be situated 8 km off the coast of Fangyuan.

The project is estimated to attract USD 1.34 billion in investments.

Overall, Taipower will invest around USD 12.2 billion in renewable energy projects by 2030, the company said on Tuesday.

Taiwan has set targets for an installed offshore wind energy capacity of 320MW by 2020, 1.5GW by 2025, and 3GW by 2030.

Note: Our original article stated that Taipower plans to install 180 MW of offshore wind power capacity by 2030, with the number sourced from Taiwanese news sites in English. However, after several of our readers pointed out that the number is unrealistically low and after checking local news sites in Chinese, the number was corrected to 1,800MW of installed capacity by 2030.
