The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has hired former senior adviser for offshore wind technologies at the U.S. Department of Energy, Gregory Matzat, to assist in the development of large-scale wind projects.

The New York state’s governor Andrew Cuomo recently committed to creating a USD 5 million New York Offshore Wind Master Plan, which will serve as a blueprint for the future of offshore wind in New York. Large-scale renewable energy projects are a critical component of the Governor’s Reforming the Energy (REV) strategy to build a clean, resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers, NYSERDA said in a press release.

Matzat will work on the development of grid-connected clean energy resources and be part of a team that will build and strengthen strategic partnerships with industry, academic institutions, state, federal and local, as well as non-profit organizations.

John B. Rhodes , President and CEO, NYSERDA, said: “Greg has a strong background in offshore wind technologies and significant expertise in project development in the public and private sectors. We are fortunate to have him join our team as the state expands its support of large-scale renewables to advance Governor Cuomo’s energy goals.”

“While the cost of renewables has come down substantially, there is still work to be done, particularly with new technologies such as offshore wind,” Matzat said. “I look forward to working at NYSERDA to help create an environment that encourages the development of large-scale renewables in New York that benefit all New Yorkers.”
