Iberdrola has awarded the Rostock branch of Goldbeck a contract to construct a building in the Port of Sassnitz-Mukran which will serve as the base for overseeing O&M activities at the 350 MW Wikinger Offshore Windfarm.
Goldbeck will be responsible for the design, planning and construction of the new building, with work due to commence following the grant of formal approval, expected in the coming weeks. The two-storey building and the attached warehouse will become the operational hub for Wikinger in 2017 when the project is fully commissioned.
“This will be the first windfarm operations and maintenance base constructed in the port of Sassnitz-Mukran and will be designed considering best practices related to energy efficiency and respect to environment,” Jürgen Blume, Managing Director Iberdrola Renovables Offshore GmbH Germany, said.
”The O&M base is comprised of an office area and a warehouse area. The warehouse area primarily serves as a place to store the spare parts and tools that will be used to maintain the windfarm. The office area will serve as the hub for the site management team who will monitor and control the windfarm on a day to day basis. The office area also provides welfare facilities (changing rooms, canteen etc.) for the technicians who will travel offshore to service the windfarm.”
With an investment of around EUR 1.4 billion, Wikinger Offshore Windfarm will have an important economic impact throughout the entire supply chain, Iberdrola says.
From 2017, when operation of the project begins, the 350 MW windfarm with produce enough clean energy to power more than 350,000 households – more than 20 percent of the total annual consumption in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
