Siemens has installed the last of the 48 turbines at the 144MW Westermeerwind Wind Farm, the largest near-shore wind farm in the Netherlands.

The Westermeerwind will be commissioned following a test phase, and it will provide enough power to meet the demand of around 160,000 Dutch households.

Anne de Groot , Director of Westermeerwind, said: “Since almost half of the wind turbines were transferred to Westermeerwind in February, the wind farm already generates sufficient green electricity for almost 80,000 households. During the coming period the other half of the wind farm will be extensively tested and upon completion main contractor Siemens will also transfer the last turbines to us. About one year after the wind farm is operational the residents and farmers in the Noordoostpolder, Urk and the former Lemsterland will be able to participate by means of bonds or shares.”

The wind farm is situated in the waters of the IJsselmeer, along the dikes of the Noordoostpolder. The turbines are divided into two rows along the Westermeer dike and one row along the Noordermeer dike, and are connected to an onshore transformer station .

Siemens started installing the 3MW turbines at the site in August 2015. The wind farm produced its first power in November 2015.
