The Seajacks Scylla, the world’s largest wind turbine installation vessel, was christened in Great Yarmouth on Thursday afternoon, 3 March.
The ceremonial champagne bottle was released by the vessel’s Godmother, Akiko Inoue, the wife of Seajacks’ chairman, Soichi Inoue.
Seajacks’ CEO, Blair Ainslie, told almost 400 guests at the reception held on the quayside of the outer harbour in Great Yarmouth that the vessel would soon be mobilised for installing 67 monopile foundations at the 402MW Veja Mate offshore wind farm in the German sector of the North Sea, expected to begin in April.
These foundations are also the largest in the world , and the vessel will be able to carry three of those per installation trip.
The Seajacks Scylla was built in the Geoje Yard of Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. It joins the fleet of 4 other Seajacks’ WTIVs.
Sailing at speeds of 12 knots or over, Scylla is outfitted with 105 metre long legs that have the ability to install components in water depths of up to 65m. Scylla is also equipped with a Huisman 1,500-tonne leg-encircling crane. The vessel also has 4,600 square meters of deck area, and a variable load of 8,390 tonnes.
Scylla has been specifically designed to meet the demands associated with working UK Round 3, Scottish territorial waters and the other North West European markets.
