First Veja Mate Monopiles Reach Eemshaven

The first three super-sized monopiles built for the 402MW Veja Mate offshore wind farm arrived at the Dutch Eemshaven seaport on 10 March, with the remaining 64 giants soon to follow, Eemshavenonline.nl reports

The monopiles were constructed in Rostock, Germany, by EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH. Weighing 1,302.5 tons each, they are the world’s heaviest monopiles ever built. The first monopile was rolled out of the factory in Rostock on 2 March. EEW expects to complete the construction of all 67 monopiles by the end of June.

The handover of the first monopile to Offshore Windforce, a joint venture of Boskalis and Volker Stevin International, is scheduled for the end of April 2016.

Offshore Windforce will then be in charge of loading and transport. The first monopiles are expected to be installed at the site in the following few months. They will be transported from Eemshaven, the base port for the project, by Seajacks Scylla, the world’s largest wind turbine installation vessel.

Veja Mate, located 95 km northwest from the island of Borkum in the German North Sea, will comprise 67 6MW Siemens turbines. Once fully operational in 2018, the wind farm will produce enough power to meet the demand of around 400,000 German households.
