France has doubled the target for offshore wind capacity planned post-2023, according to the revised objectives for the development of renewable energy recently announced by the country’s Ministry of the Environment, Energy and the Sea.
In its new energy investment plan, France initially called for the development of 3GW of offshore wind capacity by 2023, with further 3GW of capacity in the pipeline post-2023.
The newly revised objectives still propose 3GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2023, however, the post-2023 target was raised to 6GW.
As Offshore WIND reported earlier this month, the energy investment plan, which will form a part of the country’s new energy transition law, was submitted for review and recommendations to the Conseil Superieur de l’Energie (CSE).
Prior to the review, the Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables (SER), issued a call for more ambitious post-2023 offshore wind targets to be set, saying that France should raise the post-2023 bar to 12GW of offshore wind capacity.
Although the proposed 6GW target is twice lower than 12GW of capacity proposed by SER, the lobby said that it was satisfied with the recommended increase.
