K2 Management Engaged in Virginia Offshore Wind

K2 Management has been hired as an independent external expert and offshore wind technical advisor for the Virginia Offshore Wind Technology Advancement Project (VOWTAP).

The company started working on VOWTAP in the second half of 2015, and is still supporting the project to some extent.

Work has been focused on reviewing and re-scoping of contracts, validation of tenders, and assessment of the weather downtime and contingency for installation.

“During the engagement, K2 Management has been highly flexible and been able to provide valuable expert advice within short timeframes and within budget. K2 Management’s direct involvement in the review and update of our multi-contracting approach has helped us driving down cost significantly. Additionally, we have gained more clarity of the bidders and their scope of work, helping to determine project strategic overview and path forward,” Senior Project Manager Steven Pietryk , VOWTAP, explained.

VOWTAP is developing a 12MW offshore test wind project approximately 27 miles off the coast of Virginia in the United States. The project, scheduled for construction in 2018, will feature two GE 6MW Haliade turbines.

The primary VOWTAP objectives are to design, develop, and demonstrate a state-of-the art grid-connected project, employ technology innovations and research that will inform and benefit future commercial scale offshore wind projects, and develop to technologies and process solutions that will contribute to establishing offshore wind as a cost-effective renewable energy solution for the United States.
