Topside and jacket of the high voltage offshore substation (OSS) for the Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm left ENGIE Fabricom’s Hoboken yard yesterday, as they start their journey from Antwerp towards the site off the west coast of England.

By the end of this month, the jacket and topside will be installed at the construction site of the 258MW Burbo Bank Extension, located west of the existing Burbo Bank offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay.

A consortium of ENGIE Fabricom and Iemants has been contracted by DONG Energy for the fabrication of the OSS.

The load-out of the 985-tonne jacket took place at the Smulders yard on 11 May. The jacket was transported by the Matador 3 from the dry dock to the Engie Fabricom yard, where it was placed on a transportation barge. On 30 May, the substation was rolled out and joined the jacket on the barge.

The Burbo Bank Extension substation is the first one to be completed of five substations awarded to the consortium by DONG Energy. ENGIE Fabricom is in charge of the complete fabrication and commissioning on site of the five offshore substations, while Iemants is responsible for the steel construction and architecture of the substations and jackets.

The project started in December 2014 and the last substation is due to be delivered in 2017.

The other four offshore substations and jacket foundations are still under construction at the yard in Hoboken. The first topside structure for the Race Bank wind farm will be finalized by the end of June and second topside will be ready together with the two substations and jackets for Walney 3 & 4 wind farm, which will be commissioned beginning of 2017.
