Swedish energy company Vattenfall and Scotland-based wind turbine tower manufacturer CS Wind UK will today sign a co-operation agreement on the potential supply of components for Vattenfall’s onshore and offshore wind projects in the UK.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which will allow CS Wind UK to tender for Vattenfall’s future UK-based wind projects, is a ”strong signal” that UK-based suppliers can have a key role in domestic wind projects, according to Lesley Black, head of UK sales for CS Wind.

The news comes one day prior to the start of a GBP 27 million expansion project at CS Wind UK’s Machrihanish facility. The upgrade will boost the facility’s production volume for onshore wind projects, and provide additional space needed for the fabrication of larger towers for offshore wind farms.

The expansion project will make this factory the only commercial producer of offshore wind turbine towers in the UK.

“This marks an exciting time for CS Wind, with the start of significant investment in the factory, which will ensure high-quality, cost-competitive towers for both on and offshore wind projects in the UK,” local media quoted Black as saying.

The Machrihanish factory, former Wind Towers Scotland, was bought by South Korea’s CS Wind in April 2016.
