Taiwanese state-run energy company Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) has established a department dedicated to development of offshore wind farms.

The company’s Offshore Wind Power Construction Office is based in Taichung Power Plant in central Taiwan, and it will be in charge of Taipower’s first offshore wind farm project off the country’s Changhua County.

The first phase of the project is valued at around USD 617 million and it proposes construction of a 110MW offshore wind farm slated for commissioning in June 2020.

“This specialized unit has been formed not just to install wind turbines for electricity generation, but to accumulate related skills and experience,” Chu Wen-chen, Taipower Chairman, was quoted as saying by Taiwan Today.

“Our goal is to recruit and cultivate local talent in this field.”

Taipower plans to build and operate 1GW of offshore wind capacity by 2025.

The company’s offshore wind projects are part of Taiwan’s efforts to meet the goal of having at least 3GW of total installed offshore wind capacity by the year 2025.
