TenneT has signed framework agreements with Royal Smit Transformers and Siemens for the delivery of components for the Dutch offshore grid in the North Sea.

Under the contracts, Royal Smit Transformers will supply reactive current compensation coils for the transformer station on land and Siemens will deliver reactive current compensation coils for the offshore transformer station as well as power transformers for the substation on land.

TenneT said that, in the coming years, it will need these technical components for the construction of the offshore grid, which will transport electricity from at least 3,500MW of offshore wind farms to the grid on land.

Power transformers will be used at a substation to convert the voltage level from 220kV to 380kV, with 380kV being the highest voltage level of the Dutch high-voltage grid and 220kV cables connecting TenneT’s offshore infrastructure to the national high-voltage substation.

Coils will compensate the reactive current of a cable so that network losses during electricity transmission can be minimized.

TenneT is in charge of the development of the offshore grid in the Netherlands that will contribute to the national energy agreement by delivering at least 3,500MW of offshore connections by 2023 through a standardized concept of 700MW per connection.

In this line, TenneT plans to bring the following connections into operation until 2023: Borssele Alpha in 2019, Borssele Beta in 2020, Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha in 2021, Hollandse Kust Zuid Beta in 2022, and Hollandse Kust Noord Alpha in 2023.
