Nkt cables has appointed VBMS for the installation of approximately 50km of 150 kV AC high-voltage submarine cables for the Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solution (CGS).

The project, owned by Energinet.dk and 50Hertz, will connect the future Danish offshore wind farm Kriegers Flak and the German offshore wind farm Baltic 2, both located in the Baltic Sea.

The project will be carried out in Q2, 2018.

The CGS project includes an interconnector that will link Kriegers Flak via submarine cables which run from the German side to the two German offshore wind farms: the 48.3MW Baltic 1 and the 288 MW Baltic 2. It is the world’s first interconnection between two countries that also connects two countries’ offshore wind farms.

The Kriegers Flak and Baltic 2 wind farms are located less than 25km apart and will be connected via the two submarine cables delivered by nkt cables. This will secure transfer of energy of around 400MW between the Danish island Zealand and the German federal state Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Last month, Vattenfall won the tender to build the 600MW Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in the Danish part of the Baltic Sea with the lowest ever bid of EUR 49.9 per MWh, 58% below the original cap of EUR 120 per MWh.

Kriegers Flak is Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm project and is developed in close partnership with the country’s neighbours Sweden and Germany. The planned 600MW offshore wind farm will act as a ‘Supergrid’, transmitting renewable energy through power grids to all three countries.

It will be built in the waters between Møn, Denmark, southern Sweden and north Germany and its 130 wind turbines will produce around 2.1 TWh of electricity. The wind farm is planned to go into operation sometime between 2018 and 2020.

The 288MW EnBW Baltic 2 offshore wind farm was fully commissioned in the second half of 2015.
