Following the recent preliminary investment decision for the Trianel Windpark Borkum II (TWB II) project, Deutsche WindGuard (DWG) informed it has supported planning and optimisation of the offshore wind farm.

Over the past few years, Deutsche WindGuard has carried out a variety of tasks including: technical support for the preparation of the wind turbine tender, wind farm optimizations for different turbine types, assessment of effective turbulence and loading effects due to neighbouring turbines, as well as preparation of the energy yield assessment reports which formed the basis of project financing.

“With the decision to look at larger wind turbine types, questions arose regarding the impact these changes will have on neighboring turbines and the resulting requirements for authorization. DWG swiftly adapted to the change in circumstances and were quick to offer viable technical solutions,” said Manuel Eck , Commercial Project Manager of Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum II GmbH & Co. KG.

Deutsche WindGuard said one of the challenges was how to optimally integrate the larger wind turbines within the planned area. This involved the consideration of the turbine design parameters and the licensing requirements of the existing neighbouring wind farms. For this purpose, the company computed the load-relevant parameters resulting from the revised design, and tested the structural integrity of the neighbouring turbines already in operation by means of integral load simulation.

“We are delighted that we were given the opportunity to take on these challenges, and by combining the various competences within our company, we were able to meet the requirements of the project,” said Martin Strack of Deutsche WindGuard.

In September 2016, Senvion signed a conditional contract to deliver 32 of its 6.2M152 offshore wind turbines and accompanying services for Trianel Windpark Borkum II.

The final investment decision for TWB II is planned to be reached in the first half of 2017.

The construction of TWB II is scheduled to start in early 2018 and the wind farm is expected be connected to the grid by the end of 2019.

The first phase of Trianel Windpark Borkum with a capacity of 200MW became fully operational in 2015.
