The transformer for TenneT’s substation in Emden/Ost, which will collect and distribute the electricity from the BorWin3 offshore grid connection, has been transported on Saturday from the seaport in Emden to the site in the northwest of Germany.

The transformer was unloaded and positioned on Monday and the substation is scheduled to be ready for operation in September.

At the beginning of April, TenneT will bring in two more transformers for the neighbouring converter station at the site. The substation and converter station are both part of BorWin3, one of TenneT’s twelve offshore grid connection projects.

The 160km long BorWin3 grid connection will link several wind farms off the coast of Lower Saxony to the mainland. The 155kV alternating current supplied by the wind farms will be transformed into 320kV direct current on the BorWin gamma offshore platform. The BorWin3 link will transport power via cable over 130km at sea and a further 30km on land to the grid feed-in point in Emden. The direct current will then be converted back into alternating current for further transmission and distribution.

The 900MW offshore grid connection is expected to start operation in 2019.

In addition to the electricity from the offshore grid connections, the substation in Emden/Ost will also collect and distribute electricity from onshore wind farms.
