The offshore wind giant DONG Energy will open its U.S. headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, at the end of April.
After being contacted by Offshore WIND , a spokesperson for DONG Energy Wind Power U.S. said: “We are proud to have Massachusetts as our home, and we are excited to commit to the community here as we open our first permanent office space in the U.S. Massachusetts has a long history as a hub of economic growth and innovation. DONG Energy will be a part of that legacy, helping to bring the benefits of offshore wind – skilled jobs, cost stability and clean, reliable energy – to Massachusetts and the entire U.S.”
Even though the industry is still in its early stages in the U.S., the company highlighted the future economic benefits, adding that a typical DONG Energy project employs 1,000 workers per year during the construction phase, in addition to about 100 people during the 25-year life of a wind farm. Moreover, as the industry matures to scale, it can support a domestic manufacturing supply chain and port traffic that continues to generate economic growth.
The company further pointed out its role in driving down the cost of offshore wind, which has been reduced by more than 50% in the past 7 years. “By maximizing efficiencies in our development process and working with suppliers to keep costs low, we are helping to make clean, reliable offshore wind a cost efficient source of energy.”
In line with this, it might be worth to note that the offshore wind developer has just won the rights to build three offshore wind farms in Germany, two of which represent the world’s first subsidy-free projects, together with the one to be built by EnBW . DONG Energy also hit the headlines last year, after it was awarded the development of the Borssele I & II sites in the Netherlands, which was deemed the world’s cheapest offshore wind farm at the time, and cleared the path for further drop in the price of offshore wind power in the country.
“As we open our U.S. headquarters in Boston, we are pleased to begin bringing those economic benefits, cost efficiencies and clean, reliable energy to our neighbors here,” the company’s spokesperson said.
DONG Energy entered the U.S. offshore wind market in early 2015, when it took over RES Americas Developments Inc.’s (RES) development project rights for a site off the coast of Massachusetts. Less than a year later, the company acquired the rights for the second U.S. lease area from RES Americas Developments – off the coast of New Jersey.
DONG Energy will mark the launch of its U.S. headquarters by holding an invitation-only grand opening on 27 April.
