BVG Associates (BVGA) and Green Port Hull have launched a guide to the potential job opportunities available in offshore wind to people in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The guide, called ‘Job Roles in Offshore Wind’ helps professionals, careers advisors and school-leavers understand the wide variety of job roles, from a marine mammal observer to a cable jointer, and from an unexploded ordnance diver to a rope access and blade repair technician. It also provides practical tips on how to start a career in offshore wind.

“Many of these job roles are not immediately obvious,” said Clare Davies , BVG Associates. “But they will play a significant part in developing a robust and specialist UK supply chain.”

Often, people only think of opportunities offered by the main tier 1 contractors delivering large scale manufacturing and assembly of large components. A good example would be the 1,000 job roles at Siemens’ blade manufacturing facility in Hull, BVGA said. The offshore wind industry offers an incredible diversity in the type of job roles across the entire supply chain.

In preparing the guide, almost 200 functions across the supply chain were analysed. From this analysis, the 36 functions with the highest priority to Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire, in terms of the number of job roles, were identified, taking into account the significance of the worker location and current local supply chain capability.

“The guide has already been a great help to career advisors in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire,” said Dawn Hall , Project Manager, Green Port Growth Business Support. “It’s helping people understand and make the most of all the offshore wind job opportunities in the region.”

The approach used in the guide can be used for many regions, countries or even industries. Each is likely to have its own high priority functions and therefore job roles, depending on market maturity and the make-up of the local supply chain, BVGA said.

The report is available to download on both the Green Port Hull and BVGA websites and is also being distributed to schools, colleges and job centres throughout Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
