The Port of Rotterdam has taken the decision to make room for an offshore center for wind energy at sea – the Rotterdam Offshore Center Maasvlakte 2.

To this end, a new port site of up to 70 hectares is being created at the Prinses Alexiahaven.

The Port Authority expects the first companies to start operations at the newly constructed port site in two years time.

The activities at the center will be related to construction, assembly, logistics and heavy lift operations for offshore wind. The center will also cover decommissioning of the oil and gas platforms, and the oil and gas market.

Rotterdam Offshore Center Maasvlakte 2 is the very first offshore center in Europe, the Port Authority said. The realisation of the center is said to allow the companies to cluster their activities and benefit from each other’s proximity.

This synergy will be achieved through the site’s use by multiple parties, active in a variety of sectors, including offshore wind, decommissioning and oil & gas.

When fully developed, the center will have 1,600 metres of deepsea quays specially built for the highest offshore requirements, the Port Authority said.
