Ecosse Subsea Systems Ltd. (ESS), based in Aberdeenshire, are delighted to announce the award of U.S.Pat.Nos. 9422690 and 9657455 for their SUST (SCAR Uninterrupted Soils Testing) plough technology.

The ESS Over-the Stern Plough System is protected under patents pending in the EU (13728243) and in the U.S.(2014/0150303 A1). This proprietary technology, exclusive to ESS, relates to ploughs and methods for off-shore boulder-clearing, trenching and backfilling trenches and to the Over-the Stern release and retrieval of such ploughs. The technology has been developed after sustained investment and trials over an extended period. ESS patents and pending patent applications protect the company’s right to exclusively deploy those methods and design features embedded in the solution and any clients or companies interested in using this technology are invited to contact ESS for further information. ESS original SCAR patent was filed in 2007.

The Intellectual Property (IP) owned by ESS demonstrates the company’s desire and intention to both commercialise and defend its IP for its innovative tools and techniques which are now widely adopted in the subsea construction sector. The ESS patented and patent pending technologies have created a market awareness of new, efficient, and effective methods to install submarine cable & pipes in arduous conditions, and help protect ESS’s financial investment.

IP is at the core of ESS’s business model with more than 10 potentially disruptive technologies in various stages of development. The most mature of these technologies are the SCAR tools, which have been extensively proven in the offshore environment. The use of a single chassis to perform seabed preparation and pre-cut trenching and backfill all from the same basic tool is an innovative solution to an industry wide problem. ESS does not use third parties to distribute this technology. Any similar plough system employing the three functions of boulder-clearing, trenching and back-filling covered by the above patent and application may therefore infringe the rights of ESS and it is company policy to defend its intellectual property rights against any infringement.
