By 2020, 60% of Danish electricity consumption will be based on wind power.
Denmark, the home of the world’s first offshore wind farm – and thus the first one to be decommissioned, the world’s biggest offshore wind developer, and the country with the largest share of wind power in its electricity system, is sharing its expertise and positioning in offshore wind markets worldwide while it is also looking to increase the consumption of wind power in its own heating and transport sectors.
In 2015, the country’s wind turbines hit a record by producing enough electricity to cover not only Danish needs but to supply three more countries with wind power.
Denmark also made headlines last year with the results of tenders for Kriegers Flak and Vesterhav Syd and Vesterhav Nord wind farms, to a certain extent setting the stage together with the Netherlands for the first subsidy-free offshore wind projects set to be built as of 2024 in Germany.
