Prysmian has awarded Canyon Offshore with a multi-million pound contract for the provision of offshore cable trenching services on the North Sea Link interconnector, the 1.4GW subsea HVDC system with cables linking the UK and Norway.

Once complete, North Sea Link will be the world’s longest submarine interconnector and the first electricity link between the UK and Norway.

Prysmian is in charge of manufacturing and installing two parallel HVDC cables for National Grid and Statnett (North Sea Link Interconnector) between Blyth in England and Kvilldal in Norway.

Canyon Offshore carry out the trenching of approximately 900km of the two interconnector HVDC cables which will have been laid onto the seabed by Prysmian. Management of the operations, which will be performed over four annual campaigns commencing in 2018, will be provided from Canyon Offshore Limited’s Aberdeen base.

The EUR 2 billion project, which will contribute to a more climate friendly energy system, is being developed by UK’s National Grid North Sea Link Ltd and Norway’s Statnett.

The interconnector is expected to be operational in 2021.
