Winergy Showcases Vindeby Gearbox

German gearbox manufacturer Winergy is exhibiting a gearbox from the world’s first offshore wind farm, the recently decommissioned Vindeby wind farm off Denmark, at Husum Wind.

German gearbox manufacturer Winergy is exhibiting a gearbox from the world’s first offshore wind farm, the recently decommissioned Vindeby wind farm off Denmark, at Husum Wind.

The gearbox was in operation for 25 years without any failure, Winergy said, and is exhibited in Husum in its original state.

The gearbox was part of one of wind farm’s eleven 450kW wind turbines which were put into operation in 1991.

Winergy has also announced that, from September on, the company is adding a newly designed Gearbox Training Program to the Winergy Original Service portfolio. Winergy technicians will train customers and partners in different training modules in the Service Center at Winergy headquarters in Voerde, Germany.

In addition to basic theoretical knowledge, participants will learn how to carry out endoscopies and exchange components in practical “hands on” trainings with different gearboxes, the company said.

Earlier this month, DONG Energy completed the decommissioning of the 4.95MW Vindeby built in the Danish Baltic Sea. The wind farm was constructed as a demonstration project which was to prove whether it was possible to generate green power offshore.

During its entire lifetime, Vindeby offshore wind farm had generated 243GWh of power. This corresponds to what seven of the largest offshore wind turbines today can generate in a single year – or what DONG Energy’s largest project to date, Hornsea One, can generate in 17 days.
