Hydro Introduces Lightweight Self-Supporting Nacelle Design

Norway-headquartered aluminium manufacturer Hydro, formerly known as Sapa, has developed a lightweight, self-supporting structure for the nacelle cover that houses the drivetrain components in a wind turbine.

Norway-headquartered aluminium manufacturer Hydro, formerly known as Sapa, has developed a lightweight, self-supporting structure for the nacelle cover that houses the drivetrain components in a wind turbine.

In most current designs the nacelle is made from GRP and usually requires an inner steel beam structure, the company said, further adding that its design involves an outer housing which is a self-supporting structure, removing the need for inner beams and thus leaving much more space inside the nacelle.

With fewer components, it also reduces installation work and time, and saves on transportation cost, Hydro states.

The housing works without an inner structure because Hydro makes it from double skin friction stir-welded aluminium extruded panels, which gives superior structural strength even though it’s lightweight. And the reduction in weight saves yet more cost in handling and mounting.” – Hydro

The company also said the aluminium nacelle provides protection against lightning, and is corrosion resistant with no need for painting and very little maintenance required.
