Moray Offshore Windfarm East (Ltd) plans to install one hundred 9.5MW wind turbines for its 950MW offshore wind farm in the Outer Moray Firth and has now selected MHI Vestas as the preferred turbine supplier.

Oscar Diaz , Project Director, Moray East said: “Co-operation with MHI Vestas to couple the latest turbine technology with advances in engineering and project deployment has enabled the achievement of major reductions in the cost of offshore wind. Moray East will produce power at £57.50/MWhr – less than half the cost of similar projects being installed today.”

The offshore wind farm is being developed by a joint venture company between EDP Renewables (76.7%) and ENGIE (23.3%).

The project was recently awarded a GBP 57.50/MWh Contract for Difference (CfD) by the UK Government.

The Moray East offshore wind farm is scheduled to be completed in 2022.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind launched its V164-9.5 MW wind turbine in June 2017. Upon the launch, MHI Vestas said it wants to re-affirm its drive to lower the cost of energy for offshore wind. The company’s V164-8-0 MW turbines are already capturing wind energy on the Burbo Bank Extension wind farm off the coast of the UK, and are the most powerful wind turbines commercially used at this time.
