Singapore-based G8 Subsea has been awarded a contract by KOCECO for the burial of inter-array cables at a Korean offshore wind project, according to an announcement on social media by the subsea specialist’s director and co-founder Philip Sim.
The operations are expected to start in the first half of 2018, when KOCECO (Korea Ocean Engineering & Consultants Co.) and G8 Subsea will be using the Hermes 2 Pump Barge and a DPT5 trencher.
Given that KEPCO is listed among KOCECO’s clients, the project in question is most likely the Southwest Offshore Wind Project, more specifically the first phase of the project that will add 60MW to the South Korean offshore wind capacity. It is being developed by Korean Offshore Wind Power, a project company comprising KEPCO and other South Korean utilities.
The entire project, situated in the Yellow Sea southwest of Seoul, is planned to have an installed capacity of 2.5GW.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, the EPC contractor and wind turbine supplier for the first phase, recently decided it will use 5MW instead 3MW wind turbines at the project.
Southwest Offshore Wind Project is expected to go online by 2019.
