Royal IHC today launched a new multi-purpose trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) that will also be capable of supporting the construction of offshore wind farms. IHC is building the vessel for a joint venture between Den Herder (Reimerswaal Dredging) and Group de Cloedt.

The launching ceremony of the TSHD, to be officially named DC Orisant, took place at IHC’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, the Netherlands, our sister site Dredging Today reports.

Along with its other features purposed for dredging operations, the DP2 installation enables DC Orisant to perform support activities for the construction of offshore wind farms.

IHC won the contract to build the vessel at the end of 2016.

“We are proud to build this versatile vessel for a private company,” IHC Account Director Benelux André Kik said after the contract win. “Its unique arrangement makes it suitable for both the dredging and offshore wind market, and is going to be an important benchmark for the industry.”

The 5,450m² TSHD is scheduled to be delivered in mid-2018.
