Harland and Wolff has manufactured and exported 24 suction buckets for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm to ST3 Offshore’s serial manufacturing plant in Stettin, Poland.

The suction buckets will now be fitted to the jacket foundations at the plant, prior to jacket installation at the offshore site in the German North Sea.

In April 2017, ST3 Offshore, who will produce 20 suction bucket jackets for the wind farm, chose Harland and Wolff to produce the suction buckets.

Ørsted’s Borkum Riffgrund 2 will use two types of steel foundations, suction bucket jackets and monopiles. The suction bucket design consists of three legs welded together in a jacket structure, standing on top of three suction buckets anchoring the foundation to the seabed.

Located 54km off the coast of Lower Saxony, next to Borkum Riffgrund 1, the 450MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 will comprise 56 MHI Vestas 8MW turbines, expected to be fully commissioned in 2019.

In August last year, Ørsted, former DONG Energy, sold 50% of the wind farm to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) for a total consideration of approximately EUR 1.17 billion.
