DEME Group’s advanced cable lay vessel Living Stone caught fire while under construction in a shipyard in Santurtzi, Spain.
Three persons had to be treated for smoke inhalation on site, a spokesperson for DEME told Offshore WIND.
The fire reportedly started on the ship on Thursday, 15 February, at around 4:55 PM local time, and was put out at around 5:20 PM.
The extent of the damage to the vessel is minor, the spokesperson said, with the works resuming the same day.
DEME, through Tideway, signed a contract for the vessel with the Spanish shipbuilder La Naval in January 2015. The vessel was scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2017.
LaNaval shipyard failed to complete the vessel on time and had missed several contractual deadlines due to financial restructuring and the start of the bankruptcy proceedings.
Following the delays in the construction schedule, DEME moved the vessel from the La Naval shipyard in Bilbao to Santurtzi to complete the project.
The vessel is scheduled for delivery in summer 2018, according to DEME.
