Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy came in first on the world’s top wind turbine manufacturers list in 2017 and overtook the spot Vestas had been holding, according to the latest report from GlobalData. At the end of the last year, Siemens Gamesa had 9.43GW of installed wind turbines, while Vestas held 7.52GW, accounting for 18% and 14.3% market share, respectively.
The two giants are followed by Goldwind (10.4%), GE Renewable Energy (9.2%) and Enercon (6.4%), and the top five jointly holding 58.3% of the total installed capacity in 2017, up almost 7% on the previous year.
“The recent merger of Gamesa and Siemens created a strong position in the industry across the onshore and offshore space. The competitive advantage of larger size and scale, along with good geographic diversification, provided the necessary push enabling it to claim the top spot,” said Ankit Mathur , Practice Head for Power at GlobalData. “As a result of merger synergies, SGRE’s wide product mix, global presence, and strong position in the offshore wind sector should help to safeguard its lead over the closest competitors.”
Siemens Gamesa gained ground with a 26.4% rise over the previous year’s installations, while Vestas saw a 14% fall in installations in the same period. Vestas could not hold onto the top spot it attained last year against the synergies and vast geographic spread of Siemens Gamesa, according to GlobalData. For Vestas, the report does not include the offshore capacity from its MHI Vestas joint venture with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
As reported earlier this year , Siemens Gamesa was listed as the leading offshore wind turbine manufacturer in Europe in 2017. The company holds the most offshore wind turbines in Europe with 64% of the total installed capacity. MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (18%) is the second biggest turbine supplier, followed by Senvion (8%) and Adwen (6%), with the latter also attributable to Siemens Gamesa after its takeover and integration of Adwen.
Vestas recently released a report exploring the wind turbine market, which stated that the company had performed strongly throughout all regions and, with an all-time high order backlog and increasing offshore activities, it will be aiming to retake the lead in the coming years, the data and analytics specialist writes.
Goldwind, positioned third globally, is the largest wind turbine manufacturer in China for the seventh consecutive year. According to GlobalData, the company reported that it had accelerated innovation and actively expanded into the overseas wind power market and offshore wind power market.
