Iberdrola has been awarded the rights to construct two offshore wind farms totalling 486MW in German waters in the Baltic Sea.
The two projects, the 476MW Baltic Eagle and the 10MW Wikinger Süd, were selected in the second public tender organised by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur).
Iberdrola will develop these wind power farms at the same time to maximise cost efficiency and economies of scale, the company said, adding that the experience gained during the construction of the Wikinger wind farm will be invaluable for the two new projects.
Together with the 350MW Wikinger, the two new wind farms will form an offshore complex of almost 850MW and will be the largest offshore wind power project in the Baltic Sea and the largest performed by Iberdrola to date.
The new complex, combined with Wikinger, is projected to save 1.65 million tons of CO2emissions each year.
The three wind farms will supply the power equivalent to 45% of the total of consumption of the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Iberdrola said.
