Jan De Nul has completed the export cable installation works at the Trianel Windpark Borkum II and the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farms in the German North Sea.

The first two cables connect the Borkum Riffgrund 2 substation with the Dolwin Gamma converter, while the third connects Trianel Windpark Borkum II with the Dolwin Alpha converter station.

The company’s cable laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh completed the installation of the cables at the end of April, with trenching support vessel Adhémar de Saint-Venant executing the cable protection works in mid-May by means of post-lay jet trenching using Jan De Nul’s UTV1200 trencher.

The Greece-based cable manufacturer Hellenic Cable is currently terminating and testing the cable connections. Overall commissioning is planned in June/July this year.

Last summer, Willem de Vlamingh identified and removed potential UXOs from the cable routes and in spring 2018 the vessel loaded the three cables with a total length of 26.4km in Greece.

Trianel Windpark Borkum II will comprise 32 Senvion 6.2M152 turbines. The 203MW project is being developed as the second stage of the Trianel Windpark Borkum offshore wind farm, operational since 2015.

Located next to Borkum Riffgrund 1, Ørsted’s 450MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm will comprise 56 MHI Vestas 8MW turbines.

Both wind farms are scheduled to be fully commissioned in 2019.
