Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s jack-up installation vessel Bold Tern installed the final MHI Vestas 8MW turbine on Ørsted’s Borkum Riffgrund 2 wind farm on Friday, 31 August, completing the project ahead of schedule.

Located 57 kilometres off the north-west coast of Germany, the 450MW wind farm comprises 56 MHI Vestas V164-8.0MW turbines. Bold Tern loaded the first set of turbine components for the project in early May.

“It has been a pleasure to work with the crew from Fred. Olsen Windcarrier. Bold Tern has performed very well installing the 8 MW turbines. The combination of a competent and proactive crew and an experienced installation team from MHI Vestas has led to fast installation times throughout the project. We are very satisfied with the whole team which is reflected in the project finishing ahead of schedule,” James Gibbs , Offshore Installation Manager at Ørsted, said.

Fred. Olsen related company Global Wind Service has been involved in both installation, mechanical and electrical completion, and pre-assembly.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 is the first German offshore wind farm to feature 8MW wind turbine units and suction bucket jacket foundations.

The wind farm delivered first power in early August and is scheduled for full commissioning by the end of the year, with the full commercial launch planned for 2019.

In addition to Ørsted, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) is equally involved in the project.
