The Tahkoluoto offshore wind farm in Finland, the world’s first built for icy conditions, has marked one year since inauguration.

The Finnish developer Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy commissioned the 42MW project on 4 September 2017, ahead of schedule.

The Tahkoluoto offshore wind farm comprises ten Siemens 4.2MW turbines mounted on gravity-based foundations. The units have a rotor hub height of approximately 90m and a rotor diameter of 130m.

The project construction began at the site offshore Pori in spring 2016, with Jan De Nul preparing the seabed for the installation of foundations and subsea cables. The company’s heavy-lift jack-up vessel Vole au vent installed the tenth turbine at the site one year after.

In 2010, Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy installed one Siemens 2.3MW turbine at the Pori pilot project, located 1.2km off the Finnish coast, which is now surrounded by the ten wind turbines of the Tahkoluoto wind farm.
